The conceptual and functional scope of urban furniture is vast. Urban furniture refers to large collection of array of tools, objects, devices, symbols, crumbs, spaces and elements that have become popularly known as urban furniture because they are installed on the street and throughout the city's open air. In fact, urban furniture is the most commonly used term in the field of applied concepts of urban equipment in Persian. And in other words, the assemblage of components that are arranged in urban spaces that reach public use to meet environmental needs, urban furniture or city’s furniture. Overall, urban furniture are components and features that come with their various features such as color, shape, frequency, type of fitment, etc., to enhance the quality and quantity of the environment, visual features, serving people and meeting their different needs and play a significant role.
These components are considered urban furniture when they are firstly located in open urban spaces and function publicly, and secondly, their existence in the urban space meets the needs of the general public. In fact, removing urban furniture from urban spaces or being inappropriate can lead to inefficiency and disruption to the functioning of the urban system and the numerous needs of citizens remain unanswered.
The main role of urban furniture at the area of streets and urban spaces is to create places where the language of human identity and the urban landscape are desired. Urban furniture itself has many different types, each of them in term of urban design to urban identity and landscape is moving towards the identity of the city and its aspect and it is a mirror of city culture, Types of this furniture include chairs and benches, bus stops, trash cans, billboards and billboards, urban symbols and more and the unique characteristics of each of these furniture are particular importance, because by properly designing each one according to its features and proper location, they can play an effective role in meeting the needs of citizens and inducing their identity.
Urban furniture components have three essential characteristics: functionality, beauty, and identity that if possessed of all three characteristics, can meet the functional, visual, and identity needs of citizens at the same time. This, of course, requires consideration of many aspects of urban furniture design that not only color, harmony with the environment, durability, safety, and economy, but must also have a functional and appropriate placement to meet the needs of citizens.
